Associate Professor participates in a large-scale piracy meeting in the Seychelles

Associate Professor Birgit Feldtmann participates in the 19th Plenary Session of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS). CGPCS was established in January 2009 pursuant to UNSC Resolution 1851 and is a forum for co-operation between states engaging in counter-piracy in the Horn of Africa region and other relevant stakeholders (see: http://www.lessonsfrompiracy.net/) .

Birgit Feldtmann has since 2013 been involved in the work of CGPCS, starting as a legal expert in the former Working Group 2 on legal issues and she is also involved in the lessons learned project of the CGPCS. This year she is again participating as part of the Danish delegation. During the Plenary Session several aspects of counter-piracy are on the agenda, and several relevant excursions are scheduled, for example a visit to a court dealing with piracy cases. An overview on the 19th Plenary Session of the CGPCS and the topics on the agenda can be found at: http://www.lessonsfrompiracy.net/2016/04/15/forthcoming-plenary-preliminary-agenda-announced/.

Birgit Feldtmann is due to her appointment as a legal expert with the former WG2 one of the few legal scholars participating in the work of the CGPCS. She has a long experience in working with legal issues connected to counter-piracy and more general to law enforcement at sea. Her research in this field is contributing the new research focus theme ”Retshåndhævelse i Arktis og til Søs (RAS)”. Her engagement in those questions is, however, not only relevant in connection with research at the Department of Law, but also in connection with the legal education, for example in connection with the courses ”Aktuelle Udviklinger og Udfordringer i Folkeretten” and ”International Perspectives on Criminal Justice”, both taught in this Spring semester.
