Newsletter May 2024:

It is time to take the next steps towards integrating generative AI into teaching and exams. How can I, as a lecturer, get help to take these steps, and within what framework can I use generative AI in my teaching? These are some of the questions that this newsletter will answer.

By Rie Troelsen, , 5/29/2024

By now most of us have heard of and probably also tried generative AI tools. Perhaps to get an overview of large amounts of information, maybe to generate specific illustrations for a presentation, or maybe to write a party speech? In short, most of us have become acquainted with the fascinating and somewhat intimidating world that artificial intelligence offers us. As a university lecturer, the next step is to integrate genAI into teaching: which tools should students be familiar with and use in an academically relevant way, and how do I incorporate it into my teaching, supervision, exams?

This newsletter focuses on the resources that can help you as a lecturer to take the next step in integrating genAI into your teaching. One resource is a new and cross-university course, Teach GenAI, which gives you the opportunity to both get local sparring and inspiration from experts from the three universities involved (note the registration deadline of 25 June!). But of course, also other resources like the competence development activities that SDU UP offers for SDU lecturers only - and which you, together with your colleagues, can request and adapt so that the activities suit you and your teaching situations.

Good luck with your work on genAI!

New, exciting competence development offer on genAI in teaching

In collaboration with Aarhus University and Aalborg University, SDU has developed a competence development offer for lecturers who would like to work on integrating generative AI in their teaching. It is called Teach GenAI and focuses on the participants gaining knowledge and skills in the use of generative AI for their specific teaching purposes as a learning tool and/or for subject-specific purposes. The course includes developing and conducting a small teaching experiment on the use of generative AI.

The course has a duration of 25 hours and contains:

  • a kick-off webinar (2 hours), introducing the process and genAI, and a final webinar (2 hours), where the participants share their experiences with each other.
  • a series of thematic webinars on generative AI (e.g. prompting, ethics, teaching examples), in which you participate based on your needs and interests. The webinars are offered by experts from the three universities.
  • 2-3 local meetings where you get the opportunity to spar with colleagues and receive pedagogical and technical guidance for your own teaching project.
  • Access to a student resource from which participants can incorporate relevant elements into their own courses.

The course runs from 20 August 2024 at 10-12 (kick-off webinar) to April 2025 (final webinar). The first local meeting is on 27 August 2024 at 13-15.

Register for the course by e-mailing Pernille Stenkil Hansen, e-learning consultant at SDU UP (pha@sdu.dk) no later than 25 June 2024. If you have any clarifying questions about the course, you can also write to Pernille.

If you are curious about what genAI can do for/in your teaching, but don't want to engage in a teaching experiment:

The thematic webinars are open to anyone interested. You can register for the individual webinars shortly before they are held. The webinars will primarily be held in September and October 2024 and will be announced on the project's upcoming website.
