Enhanced Support for Patients with Skull Base Tumors
The appointment of Professor Eric Wang as an adjunct professor at Odense University Hospital and the Department of Clinical Research, University of Southern Denmark, significantly strengthens the team specializing in skull base tumor treatments.
Patients with extensive skull base tumors often undergo major surgeries involving extensive openings of the skull and the sinonasal system. These procedures, despite being technically successful, can result in substantial side effects.
At the Skull Base Center in Pittsburgh, USA, innovative methods have been developed over the years to minimize these invasive procedures, allowing surgeries to be performed endoscopically through the sinonasal system. Consequently, the center is now globally recognized as a leader in skull base surgery.
Professor Eric Wang from the Skull Base Center in Pittsburgh has now accepted the role of adjunct professor at the Research Unit of Neurosurgery, Department of Clinical Research, University of Southern Denmark, and the Department of Neurosurgery, Odense University Hospital. This means Danish patients will benefit from Professor Wang's extensive knowledge and expertise, both in everyday clinical practice and research.
Advancing Treatment Methods
Professor Eric Wang will participate in upcoming research projects, including PhD projects focused on skull base-related topics. The primary focus will be on extensive nasal/sinus tumors, large pituitary tumors, and clival tumors.
-The appointment of Professor Eric Wang is a significant step forward in advancing minimally invasive endoscopic surgery at the Department of Neurosurgery, Odense University Hospital – a major competency boost for our skull base team, explains Frantz Rom Poulsen, head of research and professor at the Research Unit of Neurosurgery. He continues:
-His extensive clinical research experience aligns perfectly with the department’s and the University of Southern Denmark's research strategy. There is no doubt that the appointment of Professor Eric Wang will be highly beneficial for both healthcare professionals and researchers, and most importantly, for Danish patients.
A Strong Partnership
Developing partnerships with strong and growing skull base surgery programs is critical to the progress of cranial base surgery, according to Professor Eric Wang.
-Sharing our clinical experiences while exploring new questions in the treatment and management of these rare conditions, I sincerely hope that my role as adjunct professor will yield new discoveries and allow me to partner with the outstanding surgeons at the University of Southern Denmark and Odense University Hospital to enhance the care of skull base patients in this region, says Professor Eric Wang.
He aims to host the Skull Base Team from the University of Southern Denmark/OUH at the University of Pittsburgh while also visiting and observing cases performed at OUH. Professor Eric Wang eagerly anticipates discussing challenging cases to foster further exchange of ideas. He hopes that this will be just the beginning of a rich and fruitful partnership that will advance the field of skull base surgery.
