Professor Mark Brongersma is the faculty’s honorary doctorate 2022
At SDU's annual celebration, Mark Brongersma, professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University, is appointed an honorary doctorate at the Faculty of Engineering.
Professor Mark Brongersma from Stanford University is a world-leading scientist in several modern branches of electrodynamics, including nanophotonics, plasmonics and metasurfaces.
The impact of his research is well reflected by the fact that he has been awarded prestigious scientific distinctions, such as a National Science Foundation Career Award and the International Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences.
He made pioneering contributions to the optics of metal and semiconductor nanostructures and the field of optical metasurfaces, enabling innovative technologies to realize practical components for virtual and augmented reality.
Professor Mark Brongersma has a considerable history of research collaboration with the Center for Nano Optics that originated naturally from common scientific interests in nanophononics and plasmonics.
Significantly, his recent pioneering results obtained with dynamic optical metasurfaces based on GST materials and TMDC monolayers are very close to the Center for Nano Optics current research interests, and we are discussing several possibilities for further strengthening our research collaboration (exchange of postdocs and PhD students, in particular).
Quotes
Professor Sergey I. Bozhevolnyi:
"Mark made pioneering contributions to the optics of metal and semiconductor nanostructures and the field of optical metasurfaces, enabling the development of innovative technologies for the realization of practical components for virtual and augmented reality. The impact of his research is well reflected by the fact that he has been selected by Web of Science (Clarivate) into the list of Highly Cited Researchers during the last several years and awarded with prestigious scientific distinctions."
"He also has a very open and friendly personality with a genuine interest in complex physical phenomena and insatiable curiosity regarding new scientific developments. His written papers and oral presentations are always impeccably constructed with clearly presented physics and well-formulated messages, attracting invariably large audiences at meetings and conferences."
Professor N. Asger Mortensen
"I am excited by the announcement of Mark as an SDU honorary doctor. Being one of the research leaders in nanophotonics, Mark is always an inspiration for his established peers and every newcomer to the field. Through his support and hosting of our postdoctoral scientists and research students in Palo Alto, he has become an essential part of our international network. I look forward to working further with Mark in the scope of our new DNRF centre of excellence - POLIMA."
Professor Horst-Günter Rubahn
"At the Mads Clausen Institute, our scientific activities always have bridged basic science with real-life applications. Plasmonics is a solid basis for such a bridge. I am proud that we have been able to significantly contribute to that field for more than ten years with our centre for nano optics and that now we can announce Mark Brongersma as a new honorary doctor at SDU and TEK. Brongersma is one of the key persons worldwide within plasmonics and a perfect match to our expertise."
