Increase in applications to the University of Southern Denmark’s bachelor programmes

This year, the University of Southern Denmark is seeing an increase in applications for its bachelor and professional bachelor programmes. So is the rest of the sector. This is clear after the deadline to apply for higher education expired at 12 noon on 5 July.

The figures show a 9% increase in the number of applications received compared to 2022, with 19,536 applications submitted. That figure is also 4% higher than the 2019 level before the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in the number of applicants to SDU’s education programmes exceeds the national average for growth in the university sector (HENVIS TIL UFM).

- I am incredibly pleased with the many applications we have received – and that so many people are interested in SDU’s programmes. To me, this year’s application figures confirm that thanks to our strong range of programmes and a clear profile, we have built up compelling educational offerings on our campuses, and that we are capable of boosting the number of applications to our smaller campuses outside Odense.

- In addition, it is encouraging that we are seeing a growth in the number of applications from international students, which meets the high demand for highly specialised labour throughout the Region of Southern Denmark, says Helle Waagepetersen, Pro-Rector for Education at the University of Southern Denmark.

New education programmes attract many applications

One of the positive things worth highlighting from this year’s application figures is that the new programmes offered by SDU have received far more applications than the number of places available.

• The Law programme in Esbjerg has received 430 applications for the 50 available places.
• Artificial Intelligence in Odense has received 106 applications for the 60 available places.
• The Master’s programme in Software Engineering in Sønderborg has received more than 500 applications for the 110 available places.

At faculty level, increases are seen in the Business and Social Sciences (+20%), Natural Sciences (+8%) and Engineering (+38%) programmes, while the Health Sciences (-3%) and Humanities (-17%) programmes have seen a decrease in the number of applications compared to the 2022 figures.

Applicants will receive a response on 28 July

On 28 July, the hopeful applicants will be notified whether they have been offered a place. They must accept the offer by 6 August. In the meantime, everything is being done to create the best possible start for the freshers.
