Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Architecture


The UNESCO Chair on Urban Resilience research group actively contributing to education and sharing knowledge at different levels. The research group is providing six courses at the Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Architecture at the University of Southern Denmark and lectures with numerous worldwide universities such as the University Iuav of Venice, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Politecnico di Torino, Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

 

Education and Teaching

 

In this course, students will be introduced to sustainable development principles applied to the built environment. The course will provide a general introduction to the built environment at different scales and to the design professionals that shape it. On that basis, the course will address the global challenges of sustainability, development and climate change, and it will provide a framework for understanding those challenges in the form of complexity and transdisciplinarity. The course will allow students to critically work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The course introduces students to sustainable urban development, including key concepts, challenges and case studies. First, the course introduces the historical development of human settlements, the city as a system and the city’s morphology at different scales, both in the Global South and North, and key urban thinkers and planning theories. On that basis, the course introduces the fundaments of the different phases of the planning process: analysis, strategy, action plan and masterplan.

Studio 3 – Sustainable Urban Design and Planning aims to enable the students to understand and put into practice a complete spatial planning process by simulating it. Furthermore, the students will learn concepts of environmental and climate planning, principles of governance and participation in a planning process, and the relationships between the management of the territory and its planning to develop a planning project with urban value in areas with high physical, environmental and social complexity and to apply the principles of sustainable development. During the studio course, students will develop skills in interpreting and addressing a planning process, analyzing and layout data and information critically into a comprehensive spatial analysis, to develop a comprehensive strategy and propose a masterplan for the project area.

The course introduces and prepares the student to organise and develop a research proposal using various research methods. Basic issues regarding formulating research questions, research design, and data collection and analysis are addressed. The course material encompasses both quantitative and qualitative methods in the discussion of the basic components of the research process. In addition to teaching techniques and conventions of doing research, the course also acquaints the student with critical issues in the philosophy of science and ethical questions.

aims at expanding the students' knowledge of policies, tools, and strategic and action planning for resilient urban transition, responding to the need for systemic change in tackling climate change. Furthermore, the summer school co-develops students' climate mitigation and adaptation planning skills and knowledge. In addition, the summer school uses systems thinking and problem-based learning through process design methodology to build the necessary skills and competencies to respond to a systemic transformation to foster urban climate actions.
