Energy system analysis & design

We apply a systems perspective in our research in renewable energy technologies and systems including Life Cycle assessment and energy system analysis as well as applying such analyses in system design and system integration studies. We have studied almost any type of bio‐energy and bio‐fuel system, including both conversion technologies and comprehensive full system designs. We characterize key technologies such as biomass conversion and hydrogen technologies and strive to understand their features and role in energy system integration and extract performance criteria for their mutual competitive advantages and disadvantages.

As a new aspect of integrated energy system design, we are developing a concept called EASI, Energy and Agricultural System Integration, and we strive to find innovative solutions for an integrated and co-optimized agricultural supply of biomass for food, feed and energy to a growing/changing population in a cost- and environmentally-efficient way.

Our project portfolio comprise:

Energy plan Funen

Research into the strategic development of the energy and transport sectors in the region of Funen with a special focus on local and regional solutions. See www.energiplanfyn.dk

Hydrotech: Analyses for the commercialization of hydrogen technologies

A feasibility and system integration study for the advancement and commercialization of hydrogen technologies.

SYMBIO: Integration of biomass and wind power for biogas upgrading and enhancement via hydrogen-assisted anaerobic digestion

The project aims to develop an innovative process for microbial conversion of hydrogen and CO2 to methane in a biogas reactor, thus supporting a power-to-fuel concept and the storage of fluctuating renewable electricity production. See www.biogasupgrade.dk

BioDK: Analysis of environmental and climate effects of producing and using biomass for electricity, heat and transportation in Denmark

A Carbon footprint assessment of bioenergy pathways for the future Danish energy system involving a total of 768 scenario combinations of biomass and energy conversion technologies, under current and future framework conditions.

GR3: Grass to Green Gas

The project aims to uncover the barriers and environmental consequences of using residual grass as a resource for key bioenergy pathways throughout Europe, including, in particular, biogas. See www.grassgreenresource.eu

BioTRANS: Biogas and other renewable fuels for heavy duty transport

The project aims at revealing the advantages and disadvantages of gaseous versus liquid bio-fuels for heavy duty transport in a fully renewable energy system in Denmark around 2050.
