Rish Ghatikar visiting Center for Energy Informatics
This week Rish Ghatikar is visiting Center for Energy Informatics. Rish is Chief Executive Officer at LeRa, Technical Executive at Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and a Research Affiliate at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
So fare Rish has had several talks with a number of Center for Energy Informatics employees to discuss ongoing projects and future collaboration and these talks will continue tomorrow.
Moreover Rish presented his work for students and employees at a Energy Club meeting on Tuesday the23rd. The talk was entitled: Standards and Technologies for Future Energy Systems and Innovation.
Abstract of the talk:
Driven by the need for deep decarbonization, the electric grid and the transportation sectors are going through technological and regulatory transformations. The Paris climate accord and supporting country- and state-level initiatives to alleviate global warming impacts are creating new innovation and market opportunities to accelerate the adoption for clean energy and transportation. For e.g., Denmark has one of the most aggressive clean energy goal of 100% generation from renewable resources by 2050. Such initiatives provide significant opportunities for incumbents and new insurgents to apply innovation principles and develop new technological solutions for optimal socio-economic impacts. This talk shall provide an overview and the magnitude of the problem globally and highlight ongoing efforts in the United States by focusing on:
- The need for advanced clean energy and clean transportation technologies.
- The inextricable link between clean energy goals and the future energy systems.
- Framework for innovation of platform-based models for grid operators, service providers, and electricity consumers.
- The role of open innovation and open standards to accelerate deployments.
- Examples and resulting impacts of such precedents.
About Rish Ghatikar:
Rish Ghatikar is a smart grid, clean energy, and clean transportation innovator and expert. Over the years, Rish has successfully led: (1) technology development for electric grid transactions and automated demand response (DR); and (2) integrated distributed energy resource (DER) for future energy systems, to enable California in the United States and other countries to adopt, mandatory grid interoperability standards, dynamic pricing programs, and grid automation in building codes.
As the former Deputy Leader of Grid Integration research at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), Rish led development and deployment of open innovation technologies, and is the chief-architect of a globally adopted DR standard, OpenADR. Rish was instrumental in the inception of: the OpenADR Alliance to bring laboratory invention to the marketplace; and setting-up of Demand to Grid (D2G) Lab for technology demonstration and education. Rish was also the U.S. Project Director and Co-Principal Investigator for the U.S.-India Joint Center for Building Energy Research and Development (CBERD), $25M-funded joint public-private consortia. As the former Chief Research Officer at Greenlots, Rish led the emerging technology development and applications of electric vehicle-grid integration and battery storage-integrated energy systems.
Rish’s work has appeared in over 80 publications and he is regularly invited to speak at global events and to conduct training. Rish holds Masters degrees in Telecommunication Systems, Computer Technologies, and Infrastructure Planning.
