Research areas

Center for Shared Decision Making (CFFB) is located at Lillebælt Hospital in Vejle. CFFB is a research and competence center that works with a practical approach to the concept of 'shared decision making'. The center's task is to research and implement shared decision making in clinical practice through collaboration with patients, clinicians, and decision-makers.

The center has since gained extensive knowledge and experience in shared decision making and developed, tested, and evaluated decision support tools.

As part of a culture change towards patient-centered treatment, the Center for Shared Decision Making aims to:

  • Effect of decision support tools.
  • Facilitate the implementation of shared decision making in clinical practice
  • Initiate multidisciplinary and cross-organizational research projects in the field
  • Disseminate knowledge about shared decision making

Thus, the Center for Shared Decision Making focuses on three main areas that contribute equally to the center's activities and mission.

CFFB has the following focus areas for research

  • Social inequality in health and health literacy
  • Relatives and shared decision makingImplementation research

Other initiatives

  • Further development of decision support tools, including investigating the effect of an online tool compared to a paper-based tool for use during the conversation between patient and clinician
  • Focus on patient involvement with the aim of increasing patients' knowledge of and engagement in shared decision making
  • Development of methods for measuring shared decision making
  • Investigation of clinicians' views on shared decision making

Organization of research in shared decision making

An Advisory Board has been appointed, consisting of national and international experts in shared decision making, patient-centered care and communication, as well as patient/family representatives. The center also has an internal, interdisciplinary research group and a large international network.

Senior researchers, professors, PhD students, project managers, and nurses are affiliated with the center, with Karina Dahl Steffensen as the main responsible for research.
