Siemens Foundation supports master projects

Master students from NanoSYD at the Mads Clausen Institute received a donation from the Siemens Foundation for their master projects for development of organic solar cells and light transistors.

Within both research and industry there has been a growing focus during the recent years on establishing new technologies in renewable energies and energy efficiency. The Mads Clausen Institute has thus mainly concentrated on the production of new types of energy devices such as organic solar cells for generating renewable energy, and organic light transistors that are more energy efficient. These energy devices provide many benefits compared to inorganic devices, among other they are mechanically flexible, ultra-thin and semi-transparent and are cheaper to produce.

The two master students from the Mads Clausen Institute (MCI), Reza Abolhassani and Shouhu Liu started their work on their master projects in the beginning of February, manufacturing organic solar cells and light transistors in a new unique cluster deposition system. Shouhu’s and Reza’s goal is to produce devices with a long lifetime, as this is a bottleneck in terms of the commercialization of the new devices.

The 2 students have just received the donation of DKK 30.000 from the Siemens Foundation for this project. The donation is for the purchase of a fifth deposition source to be included in the deposit system at MCI. With this system different materials can be deposited on glass or flexible foils for the manufacturing of solar cells or light transistors. The new deposition source makes it possible to construct more complex devices and thereby increase their energy efficiency and durability.
