Dr. Sarah Teichmann gives an online lecture on the Human Cell Atlas (HCA) which is an ambitious global initiative aiming to create a comprehensive reference map of all human cells, the fundamental units of life. Such a map is invaluable as basis for both understanding human health and disease. As an example of using single-cell RNA-seq data from human tissues, the research team has investigated the expression of viral entry-associated genes in different cell types of the respiratory tract and the intestine. Their data reveal potential mechanisms of initial viral infection, spread and clearance. These recent findings that may explain the high efficiency of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, as seen in the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Sarah Teichmann is Group Leader at the Sanger Institute, co-PI of the Human Cell Atlas project and member of the ATLAS Scientific Advisory Board. Her talk on May 27 is hosted by the Danish Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), where ATLAS director, Prof. Susanne Mandrup, is Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
