Learning neighbouring languages with the purpose of integration in the work life on both sides of the Danish-German Border

The project is motivated by the idea of developing bilingual teaching materials in order to support the integration of German employees in Denmark and Danish employees in Germany and at the same time support relevant agents such as job centres to manage challenges related to cross-border commuting. Further the project aims to enable efficient utilisation of the opportunities which arise as a result of the flow of workers – commuters as well as newcomers and their families. Thus, the target groups of the project are the agents mentioned above as well as commuters and newcomers on both sides of the border. Regardless of whether we communicate as native speakers or as speakers of our neighbouring language, the aim will always be a common understanding, and in order to achieve this, knowledge about differences and similarities between the countries is required. The choice of words, voice, length of sentences, etc. are part of this common understanding.

This common understanding may be facilitated through negotiation and a shared construction of reality. In the communication situation, this may be manifested in receptiveness of potential misunderstandings among the participants of the communication as well as in meta-communication, thus supporting cultural understanding. As mentioned above, a prerequisite for successful communication is knowledge about and awareness of similarities and differences between communication partners, as well as an interest in the neighbour.
