Computer Human Interaction & Innovation Lab (CHIIL)

Leading the way in human-centred software engineering to develop innovative interactive systems with a focus on optimising Quality of Experience (QoE), enhancing emotional and affective states, improving Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQL), and elevating Quality of Service (QoS).

Service

  • Specialised expertise in devising interaction designs that are not only usable but also engaging, playable, and performance-optimised.
  • Development of data-driven approaches that utilise human behavioural insights to inform and empower decision-support systems.
  • Innovation in AI-driven techniques aimed at enhancing user interfaces, user experience, and software architecture self-adaptation.
  • Comprehensive R&D environments focusing on Extended Reality (XR) mediums - Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR) - alongside Brain-Computer Interaction (BCI) and human contextual indicators (facial expression, eye tracking, heart rate monitoring, galvanic skin response) for both industrial and healthcare applications.

Research

At CHIIL, our research endeavours are focused on revolutionising how we interact with technology, creating systems that are deeply intuitive and responsive to human needs. Our team is dedicated to pioneering methods that enhance the Quality of Experience (QoE) through real-time adaptive interfaces. For example, by assessing eye-tracking data in virtual environments, we customise experiences to maintain user engagement, adapting to the user's emotional state. Our research in Extended Reality (XR) is centred on enhancing aspects of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQL), including social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being, through immersive and interactive technologies. We utilise Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) to capture biofeedback, enabling the creation of responsive environments and tools for various applications.

Simultaneously, our research strives to foster social connectedness by exploring the potential of immersive technologies in creating shared experiences that promote social play and collaborative learning. We are actively investigating AI-driven systems that not only enhance Quality of Service (QoS) but also encourage a sense of community and collaboration. These projects emphasise the importance of social interaction in technology design and are integral to developing software that supports human well-being and communal engagement, all while setting new standards for human-computer interaction in both academic and industrial realms.

Education

At the core of CHIIL’s mission is our commitment to educating the next generation of HCI professionals. Our courses are designed to reflect the innovative spirit of our services, instilling in students the ability to create designs that captivate and connect with users. This pedagogical strategy is not only about imparting knowledge but also about shaping thought leaders in HCI, poised to elevate the Quality of Experience in the software they develop. In line with our service principles, we focus our educational practices on encouraging students to utilise data-driven insights, engage with AI-driven interfaces, and explore the vast possibilities within XR mediums. By doing so, we equip our graduates with a comprehensive skillset that mirrors the interdisciplinary expertise we provide to our partners, ensuring a continuation of CHIIL's ethos into the industries they will influence.

Collaborations & Outreach

Our industry collaborations are an extension of our services and educational philosophy, embodying the principle of applying learning in dynamic, real-world contexts. We establish symbiotic partnerships with industrial entities, ensuring that our research in HCI not only leads in innovation but also seamlessly integrates into practical applications that enhance user interactions and experiences across various sectors.

In parallel, our outreach initiatives mirror our educational and service objectives, aiming to disseminate the innovative solutions we develop within CHIIL. By working closely with industrial partners, we facilitate the incorporation of HCI advancements into everyday technological applications, impacting efficiency, user engagement, and ultimately, the human experience with technology. It is through this fusion of education, research, and real-world application that CHIIL sets new benchmarks for the integration of humans and technology, continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible in HCI.
