Often asked questions

Can I have a sideline occupation/other employment besides the PhD programme?

No. The PhD programme is a full-time employment that leaves no room for additional employment and sideline occupations.

Am I going to stay abroad during my PhD programme?
The PhD School recommends a study period abroad of 3-6 months, where you get the opportunity to make contacts with international research environments outside SDU, but this is not a legal requirement. If this is not possible – e.g. for family reasons – you can also plan a study period at a Danish research institution and thus create contact with research environments outside SDU.

How do I change supervisor?
In collaboration with the Head of Department, the new supervisor and the previous supervisor, you must send an application to the PhD school with a brief explanation for the change of supervisor. It must be stated in the application that everyone has accepted the change of supervisor. Read more about changing supervisors.

What do I need to remember when submitting the PhD thesis?
You must notify the Head of Department and the PhD School well in advance (approx. 2 months) before submitting your thesis, so that the assessment committee can be composed before you submit your thesis.

What do I need to remember if I am applying for leave of absence?

If you are on sick leave for a longer period of time, this must be notified to the principal supervisor, the department and the PhD School Secretariat.

In certain circumstances, other types of leave of absence from the PhD programme may be granted upon submitting a motivated application to the Head of PhD School

As a PhD student employed at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, you must submit a written notice of maternity leave no later than 3 months before your due date to the department, the faculty’s Personnel Administration and the PhD School Secretariat.

What should I do if I don’t finish my thesis on time?
You must apply to the PhD School to postpone the submission deadline and extend the enrolment period. You must prepare the application together with your Head of Department and your principal supervisor and the application must contain a schedule for the further work on the thesis and an expected submission date.
