Algae bacteria

Genetic foundations of algae-bacteria interactions to predict phytoplankton dynamics and design algae biotechnology strategies

Tiny in size, huge in impact. The oceans’ photosynthetic microalgae (phytoplankton) sustain life on Earth. They contribute half of the oxygen in the atmosphere, power the marine food web and oceanic biogeochemical cycles. Analyses made by the new equipment (a flow cytometer) adds to the understanding of these important microalgae and the bacteria they coexist and interact with. Climate wise, the impact of such knowledge is double. We get a much better understanding of the delicate balances in the warming oceans, and we can utilize such knowledge to speed up the development of algae-based industrial applications for sustainable bioproduction.
