The Danish-Swedish border region (Øresund) has often been portrayed as a best-practice model of a cross-border metropolis. Recently, though, disillusion and frictions in cooperation have been caused by administrational and legal differences, but also by border controls enacted because of migration, crime and most recently SARS-CoV-2.
The Øresund has maritime heritage as site for collecting the Øresund toll and of Kronborg Castle in Elsinore. The Øresund bridge, opened in 2000, has since then become iconic to symbolize a cross-border metropolis.
