A comprehensive citizen science approach will be applied to B-SHAPES, with a diversity of methodological tools – content and narrative analysis of documents and newspapers, in-depth interviews, focus group interviews, visual methods, and landscape walks. These methods will be combined with feedback loops to obtain a dialogue with participants regarding the interpretation of data.

Methodologically guided by SDU Citizen Science Knowledge Center, the consortium partners will engage diverse groups of participants (regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity, skill level etc.) as citizen scientists, however a main focus will be on engaging youths. In order to ensure inclusiveness and diversity in engagement, all consortium partners will engage local stakeholders as high schools, NGO’s and local heritage associations.

A variety of activities will allow citizens to participate on different levels – some as data collectors, others by tagging the data with metadata and relevant information. Activities such as photographs accompanied by short narratives will be encouraged, and participatory techniques such as walking and mapping exercises and workshops involving participants from selected borderlands will allow a reconstruction of non-mainstream narratives on Europe and European project, thus empowering the European citizens. The citizen science approach will involve citizens in all levels of B-SHAPES.
