Application and Selection Process

Applicants must meet the requirements as listed in the application, including:

1. Be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctorate. This 4-year period is measured from the date of obtaining the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate (excluding parental leave, mandatory military service, etc.).
2. Must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the hosting institution for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately before recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
3. Meet host institute requirements for entry to a doctoral programme.
4. Demonstrate ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English to derive the full benefit from the network training. Specific language requirements may be set by the different host institutions. 

Selection Process:
Applicants must submit their application according to the process outline by the hosting institution, which generally includes:

1. Motivation Letter (describing your specific interest, motivation, and qualifications for the project)
2. A curriculum vitae including information on previous employment.
3. Copies of Bachelor and Master certificates / diploma, or anticipated date of degree.
4. Letter(s) of Recommendation.
5. Meet mandatory requirements for the MSCA-ITN program (see above).
6. Additional requirements as requested by host institution.

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated. The deadlines for each position vary, but generally fall between 7 May and 1 June 2021. The selection process typically* takes place in three rounds: 

·       1^st round: Selection based on the required application documents

·       2^nd round: An video call interview

·       3^rd round: Final selection during a recruitment challenge**

In the selection process, the suitability of the applicant is rated using a scoring system. In each round, a committee organized by the host institution will evaluate the candidate considering five criteria and give a score for each criteria. The criteria and maximum are:

·       Motivation (10 points)

·       Research excellence (50 points)

·       Enthusiasm (10 points)

·       Initiative & Independency (15 points)

·       Communication (15 points)

All candidates need to fulfill the general requirements. Within one month after the application deadline, an application is reviewed and the applicant will be informed if his/her submission meets the requirements to be invited for the video interview (2nd round).
Candidates that score 70 points or more in the 1^st round will be invited for a video interview.
Candidates that score 80 points or more in the 2^nd round will be invited for the recruitment challenge**.
The candidate with the highest score, but with a minimum of 80 points, will be offered the position. 

The interview will take place as soon as possible but ultimately within one month after a positive evaluation in the first round. Within 2 weeks after a positive video interview the candidates will be invited for the recruitment challenge**.

**with COVID restrictions, the recruitment challenge may also be a virtual process.

The appeal process is handled at the host institution - information about this can be found through the host institution's website or recruitment portal.
