Marine sediments are one of the largest reservoirs of organic carbon on the planet and host to highly diverse microbial communities. Despite over a century of research in geomicrobiology, factors shaping microbial community composition, niche differentiation and element cycling are not fully understood due to their complexities.
In my research we address some of the open questions by the application of sequencing-based microbiome data analyses (amplicon and shotgun metagenomics) and linking them to biogeochemical processes.
