I am a biogeochemist with a particular interest in the production and degradation of organic material in the ocean. I have worked in a wide range of habitats to explore how environmental parameters such as; light, hydrodynamics, bioturbation, temperature, pressure and deposition affect microbial communities and the efficiency of carbon turn-over – and how marine carbon cycling interrelate to climate change and anthropogenic impacts. In recent years, I have become increasingly interested in the hadal realm that unexpectedly has proven to act as hotspots for the deposition, retention and turnover of organic material in the deep sea. I have been involved in the development of a wide range of new sensing technologies and instruments that enable detailed investigations directly in the environment – including deep sea settings.
