The Center for War Studies and the International Relations Section at SDU invites you to a roundtable with three leading experts providing insight into the peace to (maybe) come in Ukraine.

12th October, 2023, 15.00-16.30: Workshop: Information in Conflict - making sense and unavailability

Information is central for every conflict, not only for making sense and moral judgments, but also for accessing such perceptions. Present at both levels political actors are fighting either to push their own perceptions or thwart the accessibility to competing perceptions. To better understand these practices and the effects of information control, the Center for War Studies invites you to this workshop on the role of information in conflict. Here we invite three scholars to present ongoing work on the role of information in conflict, combining different methodological and theoretical approaches to do so.

25th May, 2023, 10am -12pm: Euromissiles: Book Launch with Dr Susan Colbourn

The topic of Dr Susan Colbourn's presentation will be her latest book, Euromissiles, which tells the story of the height of the nuclear crisis and the remarkable waning of the fear that gripped the world. Dr Susan Colbourn is associate director of the Program in American Grand Strategy at Duke University. A diplomatic and international historian, she specializes in European security, the politics of nuclear weapons, and the history of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

11th May, 2023, 15.45: Book launch of Trine Flockhart and Zachary Paikin’s book Rebooting Global International Society – Change, Contestation and Resilience

This book asks if it is time to “reboot” the fundamental institutions of global international society. The volume revisits Hedley Bull’s seminal contribution The Anarchical Society by exploring the interconnected nature of change, contestation and resilience for maintaining order in today’s uncertain and complex environment. The volume adds to Bull’s theorizing by recognizing that order demands change, that contestation should be welcomed, and that resilience is anchored in local and agent-led forms of ordering. The contributors to Part One of the book focus on theoretical and conceptual issues related to order in the global international society, whilst the contributors to Part Two of the book focus on the primary institutions as listed by Hedley Bull with the addition of a chapter on the market adding a distinctive commentary on new and important dynamics of change, contestation and resilience of the existing institutions.

CWS will host the launch of Dr Danita Catherine Burke's latest monograph: WWF and Arctic environmentalism:Conservationism and the ENGO in the Circumpolar North.

25th April, 2023, 14.15-15.30: A talk by Ambassador Carsten Søndergaard

Ambassador Søndergaard will share his experience as a Danish diplomat working in multilateral organisations by reflecting on the role of Denmark in NATO and the possibilities for small states having influence in multilateral settings. These questions are of course especially important in times of change and as NATO expands its membership to include Finland and (later) Sweden.

14th April, 2023, 13:00 – 14:00: “UK Defence and a Changing Arctic” by Professor Caroline Kennedy-Pipe, University of Loughborough

Caroline Kennedy-Pipe is Professor of War Studies at the University of Loughborough (UK). Listed by the Guardian as “one of the UK’s leading scholars of war”, Caroline has published extensively on Russia, the Cold War and its legacies, but also the (re)emerging security and geopolitical tension in the Arctic and High-North. Caroline is an adviser to the UK Government’s Defence Select Committee and an affiliate fellow of the DIAS Climate Change and Conflict project.
