DIAS event: Panel discussion on research excellence and merit

25 Sep

What constitutes excellence in research? What role does merit play in this equationDIAS is pleased to invite you to a panel debate on academic merit and research excellence. At a time when society demands greater inclusion, enhanced social awareness, societal impact, a broadened sense of academic citizenship, and more qualitative approaches to academic assessment, how can and should universities shape their understanding of research excellence? How can universities best establish fair, transparent, and ambitious standards of merit?A panel of prominent DIAS researchers will address this pressing concern and engage the public in a debate. The panel will be chaired by DIAS director, Sten Rynning, who is also chairing an SDU task force on academic merit. The SDU task force is to draft a university-wide framework policy for academic merit by the spring of 2025 and submit it to SDU’s executive board. The framework policy must align with SDU’s strategy of investing in excellent people and research, and it must define criteria for research assessment at all levels of career progression. The ambition behind the task force is to endow SDU with a clear, ambitious, and, from the perspective of researchers, meaningful policy on academic merit. DIAS will make its voice heard in this process, and we encourage you to do likewise. Please join us at the DIAS auditoriumWednesday 25 September11.15-12.15.  The panelists are:

Aglae PizzoneDIAS Senior Fellow of Humanities, Department of Language and Culture
Norbert KrügerDIAS Chair of Engineering, The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute
Angela ChangDIAS Senior Fellow of Health Sciences, Department of Public Health
Carolin LöscherDIAS Senior Fellow of Science, Department of Biology
Lars Boje MortensenDIAS Chair of Humanities, Department of Language and Culture
DIAS event: Understanding complex problems and creating change in complex systems. An interdisciplinary approach to public health research – lecture by Naja Hulvej Rod & Morten Hulvej Rod

23 Oct

Naja Hulvej Rod, Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the Copenhagen Health Complexity Center, and Morten Hulvej Rod, PhD, anthropology, Professor of health promotion and Director of the National Institute for Public Health have both worked with public health research for 20 years, but only started to work together when COVID-19 hit, and their living room became their shared office space. In their presentation they will explain how coming from two different backgrounds has fuelled the development of a new framework for interdisciplinary knowledge production in relation to complex public health issues, such as health inequalities, obesity, and mental health. They will explain how a stay at University of Amsterdam’s IAS led to new thinking and the establishment of collaboration with scholars from disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, public health, epidemiology, and medicine, which is now being integrated in ongoing work.
